Liverpool owners and players back me, says Roy Hodgson

Site path: Forums > Sports

After a last-minute victory that, however temporarily, lifted the threat of dismissal that has hung over him all week, Roy Hodgson, the Liverpool manager, insisted he had the backing of both the owners and the players at the club.

Hodgson was embraced by almost every one of his players following the 2-1 victory over Bolton, which was secured by Joe Cole's intervention in injury time. "I know when players are behind a club and behind their manager and when they are not," said Hodgson, who had endured internet polls suggesting that 95% of Liverpool supporters wanted him sacked after Wednesday night's 1-0 home defeat by Wolverhampton WanderersWolves.

"Anyone who seriously suggests that after watching us play in these six months [of his tenure] that there are any problems on this front is being dishonest. I am satisfied that the team gave the performance that they want, that I want and the fans want."

It was also a performance that the club's principal owners, John W Henry and Tom Werner, would have wanted. The two men who head the club's controlling company, the Fenway Sports Group, have privately expressed their concern at the breakdown in relations between Hodgson and Liverpool's supporters. Although they are against installing an interim manager before the summer, they had begun to consider alternatives to the man who was voted manager of 2009-10 by his peers for his exploits with Fulham.
